At Iberostar we have been awarded the prestigious Condé Nast Traveler 2023 award in the "Sustainable & Eco" category for our Wave of Change project. This recognition highlights our continuous effort to promote sustainable tourism practices while providing exceptional experiences to our guests.
The awards ceremony was held at La Quinta del Duque de Arco in Madrid, a palace which has been converted into a Mediterranean hotel.
At a ceremony held in Madrid, Megan Morikawa, Global Director of the Sustainability Office, had the honour of receiving the award on behalf of the group. Morikawa emphasised that sustainability is a core value for Iberostar and that we aim to raise awareness of the importance of preserving the natural environment even during travellers' moments of relaxation.
The Wave of Change movement, launched in 2017, embodies Iberostar's passionate commitment to the oceans and the environment. Over the years, this movement has driven various actions aimed at conservation and the fight against climate change, all backed by a solid scientific basis, and has inspired the creation of the Iberostar 2030 Agenda, an ambitious plan that promotes a circular economy, responsible consumption of seafood and the revitalisation of coastal ecosystems surrounding our establishments.
To further our commitment to sustainability, at Iberostar we created the Sustainability Office, comprised of a multidisciplinary team of more than 30 experts, including marine biologists and scientists. This team has developed a science-based action plan that has led us to the elimination of single-use plastics in all hotel operationssince 2020, an outstanding achievement that demonstrates our genuine commitment.
Iberostar's vision is clear and ambitious: to achieve zero waste by 2025and carbon neutrality by 2030. We have taken significant steps towards this vision by operating all-electric hotels and providing electricity from renewable sources in Spain and Brazil. In addition, at Iberostar we are committed to increasing the green areas at our resorts, creating environments that protect and promote local biodiversity.
